Over the years, the patio has become a second living room. So why not make it comfy and inviting? Here are a few tips that can make a significant impact with just a little elbow grease.

Create outdoor traffic patterns.

Whether your yard is large or small, by creating an established traffic pattern, the yard will mesh better with the outdoor living space. This can be accomplished by laying formal walkways, or creating shifts in hardscape materials or lining an area with shrubs or trees to establish borders.

Create borders for dining areas and sitting areas.

Outdoor rugs are a simple way to create a natural zone for dining and sitting areas. Stone paths and planters can help create a natural divider as well.

Add a fire space.

A source of fire draws people. If you have space and budget, consider a full-size version; if not, investigate fire pits, which provide flexibility and affordability. Just check your local building codes to verify fire-safety and placement rules regarding outdoor fireplaces and fire pits before you invest in one.

Include comfy seating in addition to the dining table.

If you have the room add additional seating aside from the patio table. A bench, couches, and cushioned chairs naturally invite people to sit and relax. Take care not to add so much that it clutters your space or clutters traffic patterns.

Add a focal point with texture.

Add artful accents with a flower vase, candle or a pot of succulents.

Rely on containers for color.

Add a bar!

Nothing speaks summer more than an outdoor bar area. If your yard is too small for a bar, try converting a potting bench to a bar, add wheels and move it around to add flexibility for entertaining.
