OLD TOWN SPICE SHOP - BLENDING FRESH SPICES DAILY

A small shop in Old Town is bringing a whole new meaning to how we cook using fresh, quality spices. If you don’t think a freshly blended seasoning can make a difference in your dish, then think again.
“In the beginning, finding the perfect blends and coming up with new flavors involved trial and error.” Sean Godbey, Owner .
Local Spotlight: Old Town Spice Shop
Downtown Fort Collins, Colorado
It all started when Sean Godbey’s brother and sister-in-law had the idea of a spice shop. They pitched the idea to their parents who agreed it was a great idea and a solid investment. Sean was asked to manage the business; thus a family affair began. Within 65 days they went from concept to opening the doors on December 3, 2010.
Sean’s degree from CSU in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources Recreation and Tourism led him into the tourism industry. Combined with a background in hospitality and non-profit he had the skill set to make it happen.
So how does one learn to blend spices? Before opening, Sean spent hours researching and speaking to other franchise companies in the industry. Through this, they knew that wanted to be able to build a business that represented Fort Collins taste and values and decided to go the independent route vs. opening a franchise. As Sean points out “finding the perfect blends and coming up with new flavors involved trial and error.” It helps that Sean had a particular love for spices and had been doing this at home long before the business launched.
Is there a difference between a spice you buy from Old Town Spice Shop and a grocery store? Absolutely YES! According to Sean, fres is key. Old Town Spice Shop grinds, blends, packages and stocks their spices, giving them complete control in the process and as fresh as you can get. Second, quality is an essential factor, and this well guarded by Sean who chooses explicitly where each product is purchased, and that ensures the highest quality in every product.
Wholesale has emerged leading them to open a 2nd location where they blend, package and sell to multiple restaurants in Fort Collins. Sean also works with most of the breweries and distilleries in Fort Collins helping them explore and find unique flavors for beers and spirits. Although the wholesale business is growing, Old Town Spice Shop will continue having their shop downtown to share the foodie in them with the community.
Community involvement is substantial for the Godbey’s. They donate to numerous non-profit organizations and fundraising events. Collaboration is a way of life for them, and they firmly believe the more a community works together, the better a community is.
It is worth making a special trip downtown to unleash the foodie in you and they have in-house blends of special coffee too!
